Description
This Rare and Aged Black Tea Known as “Cuihong” was a limited production black tea from Yunnan in the 1970s.
Also known as Broken Black Tea, it is now very uncommon. Modern production standards favor alternative loose leaf making forms. As a result, Cuihong is considered a rare collector’s item.
To create Cuihong, tea masters would mechanically process the leaves into fine particles. This is where the name “Broken Black Tea” comes from. This processing method creates a greater surface area that facilitates rapid oxidation and creates a more robust tea. Modern methods, however, focus on whole-leaf varieties that retain the tea bud.
The goal of modern tea masters is to retain as much of the leaf’s shape and form as possible. Cuihong, on the other hand, was all about speeding up the oxidation process and creating a robust, hearty tea.
This cultivar is smooth-tasting, with a deep red color. Available in 25G loose leaf format.
