Low caffeinated tea provides all the flavor and joys of tea with none of the jitteriness associated. And unlike decaffeinated tea, these drinks are 100% natural. Many of the “decaf” options found in your local grocery store have undergone a process that can use everything from compressed carbon dioxide to potentially harmful solvents.

You won’t find any methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and other hard-to-pronounce chemicals anywhere near our teas. It’s exactly as nature intended.

A number of factors help to keep caffeine levels low. For instance, tea grown at higher elevations and milder temperatures tends to produce a lower concentration of the stimulant. Tea produces caffeine as a natural insecticide to protect its young buds from insects, so there is more caffeine in younger buds. Giving them time to grow and mature is key to producing low caffeinated tea.

“Off-season” teas, those grown outside of the typical tea season, can have significantly less caffeine. This is due to temperature and humidity changes. Unbroken and minimally produced tea is usually lower in caffeine too, so the leaves are delicately handled during production.

The production process is also key. Although most teas are not roasted, the ones that are (including some varieties of oolong) have less caffeine, as the roasting process denatures the compound.

It’s not just about creating a less stimulating tea, perhaps one that can be enjoyed later in the day without impacting sleep. Caffeine is responsible for some of the bitter flavors in tea. Limiting this compound usually creates a fresher and more mellow flavor.
