The story of Assam tea is the story of modern tea itself. It began in the early 19th when a Scottish explorer found native tea trees growing in Northeast India. At the time, China dominated the tea market, but this discovery changed the industry.

The British East India Company then founded the Assam Company, and within a couple of decades, it was mass-producing Assam tea in India. The market grew, demand increased, and India became a leading producer of tea. However, Japan wanted its share and looked to the controlled territory of Taiwan.

The Japanese took Assam to Taiwan, focusing on the area around Sun Moon Lake. Basically, they looked at the misty climate and red soil, and saw an area that mirrored the best tea-growing regions in India.

After several experiments with this large leaf varietal, they began producing large quantities of Assam Black Tea. Today, farmers continue to produce high-quality Assam around Sun Moon Lake. Like all Assam tea, it’s rich and malty, with notes of honey and stone fruits.

What makes Taiwanese Assam unique is that it often lacks the bitter notes found in Indian Assam. It’s fruiter, maltier, and sweeter, largely thanks to the region’s unique terroir and climate.
