Huang Pian translates to “Yellow Leaves”. It refers to the larger and less uniform leaves found during Puerh Tea production. Historically, tea masters rejected these leaves. They lacked the desired uniformity, so they rarely made it into the final product. Today, however, Huang Pian leaves are prized for their unique sweetness and smoothness.
The leaves are bigger and older, which means they have spent more time on the tree. As they grow, they develop more of the polysaccharides that give tea leaves their sweet flavors. They’re also robust, and you can steep them well over ten times while enjoying a flavorful cup each time. You will need to increase the steeping time for each brew, though.
Aged Huang Pian is highly sought-after. When the tea has been aging for at least 7 years, it begins to develop richer, fruity flavors. The longer it ages beyond this point, the more intense and complex those flavors become.
