Description
We source our 2008 Aged Purple Tea from the rare purple leaf tea gardens of Yunnan, China.
Unlike most teas, Purple Tea is produced in limited quantities each year and is rarely aged. This batch was hand-plucked and dry stored under the guidance of a renowned tea master in Yunnan. The unique coloring of Purple Tea comes from naturally occurring anthocyanin pigments. These antioxidant pigments are the same compounds responsible for the unique colors of many blue/purple fruits and vegetables.
The tea plant produces anthocyanins as a means of protecting its developing leaves against harsh, direct sunlight. Coupled with the extremely high elevation and cool, misty temperatures, these conditions force the plant to produce more protective antioxidants. It grows slowly and fights against the conditions, and as a result, it develops sweeter and more flavorful leaves.
