Description
Wuyi Rock Tea is one of the most famous and highest-grade Oolong teas not only in China, but also worldwide. There are several hundred varieties, and experts typically narrow these down to just 10 or so. We looked at the overall selection, created our own shortlist, and created a sampler of 6 Wuyi Rock Teas.
These 6 teas provide an excellent starting point for newcomers to Wuyi Roch Tea, while also offering a unique selection:
- Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe): Arguably the most famous rock tea variety, this Zheng Yan selection grows within the Wuyi National Park. Tea masters use a lengthy, traditional process to craft this tea, and it retains its flavor over multiple steepings.
- Rou Gui: A medium dark roast selection from the famous Ma Tou region. Rou Gui has strong mineral flavors, as well as woody, cinnamon notes. It grows in a cool, misty climate. The tea plants grow slowly and develop complex flavors that are further enhanced by the roasting process.
- Tie Luo Han: A heavier tasting, mouthwatering selection grown in tea crops at the base of a pristine fountain within the Wuyi Mountains. Roughly translating as “Iron Warrior Monk”, the name draws from a legend that says it was created by a monk with golden skin.
- Shi Ru: This variety, which translates as “Stone Mile”, doesn’t have the strong mineral flavors of similar varieties. It’s smooth and balanced. However, the tea plants tend to produce lower yields, making it a rare tea. Subsequently, high-quality varieties can be very hard to find.
- Lao Cong Shui Xian: This variety boasts a traditional taste that is more smoky and mineral in flavor. It’s harvested from older and more established tea trees and, thus, the tea has a unique minerality and depth.
- Qi Lan: A floral and light-roasted option that tends to be much lighter than other teas grown on these historic mountains.
